Ariel Pocock

At 20, Ariel Pocock has already earned national and international recognition for her work. Recognized by Downbeat Magazine, Ariel won both the jazz piano and jazz voice divisions for her age group. During the 2009 Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center, Ariel received the award for Outstanding Solo Pianist as well as the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation's top award. Other achievements include winning first place in the 2010 Seattle-Kobe Jazz Vocalist Competition, earning Outstanding Piano Soloist at the 2008 Lionel Hampton International Festival, and opening for Sheryl Crow at the Seattle Opera House. Notable performances include Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Lincoln Center, in Kobe, Japan, and as a part of Cedar Rapid's Music Under The Stars series. She has also appeared as a headline act in the Elkhart Jazz Festival and the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Ariel currently studies with Shelly Berg on full scholarship at University of Miami's Frost School of Music, and performs and teaches year-round.

This year, Ariel was selected as the jazz voice Mentor Fellow for the 2012-2013 Stanford Jazz Workshop. This summer, she spent two weeks teaching combos, lessons, and masterclasses, as well as performing in the festival with the six other Mentor Fellows. Next summer, she will be invited back to resume her residency with increased teaching and performing responsibilities.

Ariel is working on her debut recording this fall. She is backed by jazz legends Larry Grenadier, bass, who has recorded extensively with Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau, and Chick Corea, and drummer Eric Harland, known for his work with McCoy Tyner, Joshua Redman, and jazz supergroup James Farm. Brilliant young guitarist Julian Lage will also be featured on several duets. The project will be produced by Grammy-nominated Matt Pierson, who has worked with everyone from Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, and Kirk Whalum to Willie Nelson and k.d. lang. Visit ARTISTSHARE.COM for more information on how you can be involved with this recording before it is released on May 17th, 2013.
